REGS World Topics Vol. 8: Introducing the Revitalization of the Historical Internationales Congress Centrum (ICC) in Berlin
We will select and deliver unique real estate news from topics related to architecture regularly sent by GARDE agents from around the world. This time, we introduce the news of the historic Internationales Congress Centrum (ICC) in Berlin.
Berlin
In 1979, in what was then still a divided West Berlin, the Internationales Congress Centrum (ICC) opened grandly. With a floor area of 27,900 square meters and 80 halls and exhibition areas ranging from 20 seats to 5,000 seats, it was the largest conference center in Europe. Its silver spaceship-like exterior and retro-futuristic interior made a lasting impression. However, over the years, it deteriorated, leading to its closure in 2014. In September 2023, it was opened to the general public for 48 hours, aiming to gain support for its revitalization as a cultural facility by allowing people to experience its charm. The space, resembling a set from a futuristic science fiction film, was filled with influencers, and all-night parties on the terrace added to the excitement. ICC’s vision to transform this place into a Contemporary Culture Center where culture, technology, art, digital, research, and the public come together seems to have hit the mark.
