Berlin
Built in 1906, this former women’s prison in Lichterfelde is now “THE KNAST,” a center for art, culture, and gourmet dining, drawing much attention. Designed to integrate with residential surroundings without a typical prison facade, it resembles a mansion on the outside. Inside, the historic cells remain. Owners Dr. Joachim Köhrich and Janina Atmadi, known for the Michelin-starred “theNOname,” led the interior design for the restaurant and speakeasy bar, where photography is prohibited. The space is elegantly rugged with leather stools, copper tables, and remnants of its prison history, like drips on the floor and original doors.
