As Japan emerges from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the recovery of tourism is both an opportunity and a challenge. While the influx of tourists is vital for economic recovery, it is putting increasing strain on popular tourist destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Overcrowding, strain on infrastructure and overtourism in these cities have caused conflicts with local communities. In response to these pressing issues, the Japanese Government has launched a comprehensive strategy to address overtourism and promote sustainable tourism growth throughout Japan, while also preventing tourism resources from becoming idle real estate.
